This is available for free as an NHS service for people between the ages of 40 and 74 and also available as a private service for those not eligible under the NHS scheme. The health check is confidential and will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes during which your pharmacist will take the following measurements:
- Body Mass Index (BMI)
- Blood Pressure
The check is carried out in the same way it would be if you visited your GP. The only difference if you choose to go to a pharmacy, is that you do not need to have a blood test before your check.
The pharmacist will measure your cholesterol by doing a finger prick blood test. The results will be available while you wait and will be explained to you as part of the check.
The pharmacist will also be able to order any further blood tests if these are required, like your GP would. If your blood pressure is high, this may include a blood test to check your kidneys and to check for diabetes. All results will be sent to your GP.
The pharmacist will give you comprehensive personalised health advice on how to lower risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle. They can also direct you to physical activity schemes within Lewisham and provide you with support to stop smoking if this is needed.
Will my GP be informed of the results of my check? Yes, the results of your check will be automatically sent to the GP practice you are registered with. If you are not registered with a GP but are a local resident, the pharmacist will be able to carry out your check, and will then signpost you to register with a local GP.
